I thought that the Love Birds were just perfect for my in-laws' anniversary card! I printed them out on white, light pink and medium pink cardstocks and then paper pieced them. I chose the swirly paper and the scallop border punch to echo the curviness of the birds and hearts. I've used my mini flower Nestabilities before, but I got the idea to curve up the petals from the April issue of Craft Stamper magazine. I love that magazine and am jealous of those of you in the U.K. who get to see the issues before they hit the newstands here!

A Challenge and A Secret

I managed to get this card done tonight for the weekly Whiff of Joy Challenge. This week's challenge was a sketch challenge, which I love! Deciding on a layout is usually what takes me the longest when I'm making a card.


I, the queen of indecision and procrastination, managed to get this card done in approximately an hour. How did I manage this? Let me let you in on a little secret... I hate to clean up!! Despite my best intentions, I am usually surrounded by a certain amount of clutter. If I was a fictional character, I would be Pigpen or Oscar Madison. So, rather than clean up all those paper scraps from my workspace (because I certainly couldn't throw them away, now could I?!), I'd rather use them to make another card. These scraps were leftover from the Kewpie card I made tonight and they seemed like they'd work well with this image and sketch. (That's also how Rosie was followed by Russell!)

So, sometimes a bad habit can also have its silver lining. :-)

Pomp & Circumstance

I had a co-worker request a Kewpie graduation card for her student teacher. I didn't have any graduating Kewpies or even any graduation hat stamps, so I thought this guy would do:


Our school colors are purple and gold, so that decided the color scheme.

I hope he is "graduation-y" enough!

Russell

I made this card tonight for the sketch challenge over on A Spoon Full of Sugar. It's sort of a "companion card" to Rosie, which uses the same digital stamp set, Russell and Rosie, and some of the same Basic Grey Bittersweet paper.


Until I went looking for the American Craft Elements buttons that I'd recently bought, I'd forgotten about the Bazzill paper flowers that I also purchased. I really like working with them and wish I'd bought some in other colors.

Happy Birthday, Katie!

Today is my niece Katie's birthday. Katie has two dogs, Clyde and Riley, who are her "babies". Here's a picture of Katie and Riley from last Christmas:

He's a big baby who loves to be held. He usually finds plenty of people at family gatherings to oblige. :)

I wanted to use a dog image on her birthday card and knew this image of a dog in a gift box would be perfect!


I have resisted the current trend to decorate the inside of my card. These days I'm lucky to have time to make the outside pretty! ;-) Since this cardstock is rather dark, though, I gave in. It's nothing fancy, but here's the inside of my card:

Everyday Inspiration

Have you ever felt that your stamping mojo was MIA? Mine has definitely been missing this week while I've battled a sinus infection. A good way to get your mojo back is to look around you to find inspiration. Maybe it's the spring flowers outside. Or the colors in the new outfit you just bought. Find something you love and see if you can translate it into a stamping project.

For me, my inspiration was my new quilt. Despite not feeling great yet, I couldn't wait to find time in my stamp room today to make a card based on the colors in my quilt. This is my new bedding:

In real life, it's a little darker and the squares that look cream colored are actually a pale silvery aqua. Here's the card:

I used the colors in the quilt as well as the floral and paisley prints to inspire my card. This patchwork background is another great way to use up scraps. I used a square punch but if you're accurate with your measurements, you could cut them with a papercutter.

So, look around and find something that inspires you this weekend! :)

Secretaries' Week

I always give little gifts to the secretaries at both girls' schools. Jessica's school has 6 secretaries, so I try to keep the gift to something small and inexpensive. I bought these Laura Ashley post-it notes and little trinket boxes a long time ago in Michael's dollar section. Jess helped me fill the boxes with Dove chocolates and tie the post it notepad and box together with ribbon. I stamped the tag with a flower dollar stamp from Michael's and a retired sentiment from TAC.


I gave the secretaries at Ali's school notepads, etc. at Christmas so I bought them each a gift certificate to Barnes & Noble and made bookmarks with "Reading Flopsey" from My Favorite Things stamps. (Bookmarks are great for using up your ribbon and paper scraps!)


I packaged up the gift cards, bookmarks and a few Dove chocolates into white paper lunch bags that I stamped with the same flower stamp that I used on the tags above.

For those who don't know, I'm a secretary at a local high school. I had a very nice week. Our principal actually serves all the secretaries lunch! My gifts included a Barnes & Noble gift certificate - I love to use those to indulge in my favorite stamping magazine, Craft Stamper. It's from the U.K., so it's a little pricier and harder to find than U.S. stamp magazines, but I love the projects and detailed instructions. I even enjoy looking at the ads, seeing products from some of the U.K. based products.

MIA

I apologize for the lack of posts. I've been sick and I'm waiting for the miraculous wonder of antibiotics to kick in. I have stamped a few things this week and photographed them. I'll post a project or two this evening.

Kewpiesta!

People around here take their Kewpies seriously! Yes, that may sound odd, but trust me - they do. The illustratror, Rose O'Neill built a house called Booniebrook in the Ozarks area of MO so she's sort of considered a "home town girl". (She was actually a very progressive woman for the time.) The mascot of the school where I work is a Kewpie, so some of our students are going to the annual Kewpiesta event. I'm sending some Kewpie cards for them to sell for me:



I don't use white core cardstock a lot, but I do like to use it with my Cuttlebug folders to get this effect. The black cs is run through the Cuttlebug using the music notes folder, then sanded to expose the white inner core of the cardstock.

It took me a LONG time to find Kewpie stamps. This cute little guy is from a set by Crafty Secrets.

MISSING CHILD!!

4/23/09 UPDATE: Ashley is safely back home with her parents. A local tv station carried the story and she called home within minutes. This was her post on Facebook:

Woo hoo! It's official!

You may have noticed a new widget on the right side of my blog. Yes, I am now officially a design team member on Sally-Ann Hancock's new site, DigiStamp Boutique! My friend Diana gave me the link to Sally-Ann's Grab A Doodle Do designs and I was hooked! I love her designs and was thrilled when she accepted my application.

The new site isn't open quite yet, but should be ready for business soon. As soon as it is up and running, I will post an announcement and add the link to my design team logo.

Oops!

I think this is a sign I'm a little burned out on challenges.... ;-)

I was working on my card for the "splash of color" challenge when I realized I was supposed to use a WHIFF OF JOY stamp, not a Stampavie stamp. Oops! At that point, the card was assembled and partially colored, so I finished it up anyway:


Lily & Milo are just so sweet together. I love this stamp.

Now, here's my card made with a Whiff of Joy image, Melinda Blowing Kisses, that my friend Diana shared with me:


Whiff of Joy girls are always so sweet and I love coloring in their hair! I used one of my favorite printed papers on this card. I love the contrast of the crisp black and white colors with the delicate flowers and swirls. (I love anything swirly!)

Toodles and Binks

Another great UK company, Toodles and Binks, is giving away some mystery blog candy. They're not yet telling us what it will be, but I'm sure it will be wonderful! I don't own any T&B yet, but Adam - You're So Tweet is definitely on my wish list. If you spend a lot of time blogging, you're seeing more and more great stamps and digi stamps from UK designers/companies. I think this is the new version of the "British Invasion"! :)

Alfie

My only sibling is a girl. My only two cousins are both girls. My kids are both girls. My dog? Yep, a girl. Besides poor DH, the only known males in my household are the cat (who we originally thought was a girl) and the guinea pig. (The jury's out on the two snakes.)

So, suffice it to say I don't need use many "boy stamps". But I really love the "Alfie - Collection 1" set of digital stamps from Grab A Doodle Do. Most boy stamps are of cutesy, little boys. I like Alfie because he's a little older, a little cooler. I could see myself making a card for my 14 year old nephew with one of these stamps.

Today I used Alfie images on two sketch challenge cards. The first is for a challenge over on Just Christmas and Birthday Cards:


I made a few changes to this sketch, starting with turning it on its side. Since Alfie's definitely not into that girly stuff, I skipped the bow and replaced the flowers with some very masculine antique copper brads. Voila! A perfect birthday card for your favorite young man.

I made this card for a sketch challenge over on Crafts 4 Eternity. Being a dog lover, I'm kind of partial to this image of Alfie with his dog. :-)


OMG, did that little tag ever cause me heartache! The first time I stamped on the shiny side of the tag, so the ink smeared while I was handling it. The second time I fiddled with the twine too much and pulled it through the top of the tag, tearing the tag. The third time, I stamped For You upside down. Ugh! I'm just glad it finally came out right!

I usually wind up playing around too much with my Copics to even attempt to list the colors used, but Alfie was pretty straight forward. I used Skin White, Prussian Blue and Manganese Blue for his jeans, Lime for his shirt, a combination of Sepia and Sand for his hair, Sand for his dog, and Burnt Umber and Sepia for his shoes.

Pink and Green Prettiness

This week's challenge on the Dare U 2 Digi Stamp blog was to use a pink and green color scheme. My digital image is from Lindsay's Stamp Stuff. Isn't it pretty? I love all of the swirls! (BTW, Lindsay is having a design team call over on her blog, The Frugal Crafter. Go check it out!)

I used The Essential Glue Pad with some stamping glitter to make the pink accent paper. It was the first time I had used the glue pad and it was a lot of fun! (Now, if only I could figure out a way to use glitter without winding up making MYSELF sparkly, that would be great! lol)

Some Bunny

I love TAC's latest free download of black & white paper, so I decided to see what it looked like printed out on colored cardstock. I printed off the diamond pattern on one of the lighter shades of pink from the Bazzill Monochromatic Red-Violet pack. I like how it turned out and can't wait to try printing out some of the other patterns on other colors!


Supplies: Black & White digital paper (TAC), Some Bunny (TAC), Bazzill Monochromatics Red-Violet cardstock (TAC), ribbon (TAC), black and white cardstock, Making Memories button, DMC embroidery floss, Prismacolor pencils.

Flopsey

I made this gift set for last week's "judges only challenge" over on the Splitcoaststampers MFT Idol forum. It uses MFT's Reading Flopsey stamp set along with a retired paper line from The Angel Company (TAC) called "Mulberry Meadow". (I really loved that paper and was so bummed when they discontinued it!) Everything is colored with Copic markers (of course!).




OK, confession time... The card was supposed to be a "card with removable bookmark". like the one in the MFT forum on SCS. My bookmark was too wide to slide under my main image, though. I'll have to try this again because I think it's a cool idea.

As promised in yesterday's post, here's my round up of cards from "time travelling through the holidays"...

First stop - St. Patty's Day. I made this card for the "Yellow and Green" challenge over on Simon Says Challenge, using a "Lily & Milo" stamp from Rachel Anne Miller. I had the *worst* time trying to take a picture of this card. I don't know if all the green threw off my camera's settings or what! I bought this stamp in St. Louis along with the printed paper. I love that paper so much I hated to cover it up, even with Lily. :-)

Next up - Thanksgiving. This card started off as a partially finished project from an SU! stamp club meeting I attended with a friend. I performed some major rehab, adding some printed paper in the process. I almost always include printed paper in my cards now - I think it adds a lot of interest. The original card was also "naked", so I added an American Crafts button tied with Scrappers Floss as an embellishment. Scrappers Floss is great!! It's made from paper and very thin so you can thread it through buttonholes - no needle needed!


Next stop - Christmas. I'm behind in the monthly Christmas Card challenge over on Splitcoast, so I needed to come up with a quick card to help me get caught up. This little cutie is from the Christmas Collection of digi stamps from Grab A Doodle Do. It's hard to see in the photo, but this striped paper is glittered, giving the card a little "extra" without having to add another layer or embellishment. I love sitting in my craft room for hours playing with all my embellies & papers but sometimes you need something cute & quick!


Whew! Like Peter, I did finally arrive back at Easter. Here's the make-n-take we did at the crop yesterday, which uses the Happy Easter set from TAC. I love the collection of coordinating buttons & paper and felt flowers in the "Lemonade" Buttons & Blossoms embellishment boxes! It made it easy for everyone to find a coordinating button & flower.

Here Comes Peter Cottontail...

Sorry for not posting any cards today! It was time for the monthly crop that I do with my friend & CM rep, Jill Overton. We made a cute Easter card where I demo'd sponging & masking. What time that wasn't spent at the crop was spent getting ready for the big annual family Easter dinner and helping the Easter Bunny to make his annual visit. :-)

I'm just watching the end of "Here Comes Peter Cottontail". (Yes, this is a kids' movie and I'm way too old to watch it, but it's not Easter until I do.) Think Rankin and Bass, Danny Kaye, catchy little songs, talking Easter bonnets, etc... If (like me) this fills you with a nostalgic euphoria, check this out this trailer. You cynics out there are going into sugar overload, I'm sure! ;-)

Anyway, back to the stamping.... In the movie, Peter sleeps through Easter and loses the egg delivering contest to become the new Head Easter Bunny. Instead, the new Easter Bunny is a vile, cranky old rabbit named Iron Tail. (Although if some kid rode over my tail, I think I might be cranky, too!) Peter then spends the movie traveling through time (and various holidays) trying to get back to Easter for a contest re-match. Tomorrow I will post some "through the holiday calendar" cards. Will Peter and I make it to Easter? Come back tomorrow and find out! :-)

For Somebunny Special

Here's my entry for this week's Monday Mojo sketch challenge:


I love how versatile this "Happy Easter" set is from TAC. It's really not just an Easter set; it could be used for a birthday card, or even a baby card.

Isn't his little fluffy tail cute? It's actually cut off from a strand of Christmas "mini-garland". I think it was supposed to be used for Christmas stuff because there are sparkly threads between the pom-poms, I think to make it look snow-y. It's fun to find a different purpose to a crafting item!

Supplies: Happy Easter (TAC), Brittany printed paper (Paper Loft), scalloped circle (Cuttlebug), antique brass brads, Copic markers, Palette Noir ink, white pom-pom, ribbon from HL.

Rosie

Isn't she cute? Rosie is a digital stamp that I just purchased from Grab-A-Doodle-Do. What a perfect excuse to use my new Basic Grey Bittersweet paper (love it!) and one of the new "Nursery Collection" Prima roses that I bought today. (I've been seeing similar roses on other cards and was so happy to find some locally!)

For the card, I used this sketch from the DareU2DigiStamp blog. My color inspiration came from two challenges with some similar colors. This week's CopicsColorChallenge was to use some combination of red (Crimson), brown (Light Walnut) and green (Moss) Copic markers. I didn't have any of those exact colors, so I substituted a combination of Sepia/Sand for Light Walnut and Lime for Moss. CuteCardThursday's challenge was to use pink and brown. Now *that* is easy since that's my favorite color combination! :)

It's All There in Black and White

I'm so proud of myself. I just got this stamp set today and already have made my first card with it! (As soon as I saw it, I wanted it!) I made this card for Amy Rysavy's most recent weekly sketch challenge. If you've never checked out her site, Prairie Paper and Ink, you really need to head on over there. My friend Stephanie told me about it and I've been a regular reader ever since.


I love this free new digital paper download from The Angel Company! (Isn't free cardmaking stuf the best?!) And I really like this ribbon from the "Black and White Ribbon" collection. Whenever I've bought this double stitched ribbon at Michaels or Hobby Lobby, it's been very thick, stiff and hard to work with. This ribbon is much thinner; it was easy to make a neat, tiny little knot with it. This was really a fast and fun card to make!

Crafty Candy

The Crafty Goings On blog is offering some awesome blog candy - a set of 72 Copic makers! (Boy, would I love to win those!!) If you use an image from her shop, Charmed Cards & Crafts, you can be entered into the drawing twice.

These days I use Copic markers on most of my projects. I still use my Prismacolor pencils a lot, but I love the speed and ease with which I can blend my Copic markers. I just wish I had more! (Maybe I'll get lucky and win this blog candy, huh?) Here's a card I made for the MFT Idol contests going on over at SCS:

Three challenges

I don't combine challenges very often, but I've been visiting my friend Diana's blog and was inspired. (Diana is the QUEEN of challenge combination!) I actually managed to make one card for three challenges!


My card features the adorable Matthew from Whiff of Joy stamps. The Whiff of Joy challenge for this week was to use distressing techniques on your card. I used my Heidi Swapp distressing tool on the edges of my image, then inked the edges with Palette Burnt Umber ink. I also used the same ink to sponge the edges of the paper strips near the bottom of the card.

For my layout, I used this week's sketch from the Sketchy Saturday blog. The color inspiration is from this color challenge on K Werner's blog. My printed paper is from the "Fresh Linens" collection from Front Porch. Matthew was colored in with Copic markers.

An A Mus-ing card

I made this card for the sketch challenge over on Stamp With Fun. I Bought these A Muse stamps this weekend in St. Louis at Natalie's Inkspot. They are so darn cute!


The patterned paper and Dew Drops are also "goodies" from my day in St. Louis.

One Layer challenge

The Hero Arts blog is celebrating their one year birthday with challenges and prizes. Here's my entry for the "One Layer" challenge:

I just bought this Hero Arts set yesterday at Archiver's on my trip with Diana. It's a lot of fun to play with! I did some reverse masking and sponged Versamagic Tea Leaves ink all over the tree. I used my Copic markers to color the details and add "grass".

Making a one layer card is much harder than it sounds! The really tricky part to this card was stamping two birds. There is only one little bird stamp and he faces left. I wanted a second bird to be looking back at him. I used the technique of "reverse stamping" to make a second bird, which I then colored, cut & glued to the tree with my trusty Sakura glue pen.

Supplies: Trees, Birds & Messages (Hero Arts), Copic markers, Versamagic Tea Leaves ink, Versafine black ink, sheer ribbon (HL or Mike's), iridescent white 3D fabric paint (flower centers).

Two Challenges

Diana and I are hitting the road tomorrow to check out the St. Louis stores, so I'm posting my cards tonight for two challenges that are due tomorrow.

First up is the Lilac and Blue challenge over on the Colour Create Challenge blog. The extra (optional) requirement was to include ribbon and swirls. If you look closely you'll see a swirl along the bottom of the piece of printed paper.


The printed paper (A Little Whimsy) and stamp *Mice Day" are both from TAC.

Next up is my card for the challenge on The Corrosive Challenge Blog. It's a new blog run by a listmate on a Stamping Bella group, so go check it out! This challenge required a Christmas card with an animal on it. I just received this cute kitty from Rubbernecker - perfect!


It's hard to see, but I put some Icicle Stickles on the Christmas lights so that the image wasn't overpowered by the glitter paper from DCWV.

Cute Card Thursday

This week's challenge on Cute Card Thursday was to use citrus colors in your card. We are in the midst of some rainy, grey weather so these bright shades were a welcome sight!
